History

Stanley Cup in 1995, it was amidst rumors that the franchise would move to Nashville. Despite playing championship-caliber hockey in the 2002–03 season culminating in a Stanley Cup that year, the Devils only averaged 14,858 fans per game at their home arena, Continental Airlines Arena at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford.

A project to build a new 18,000 seat arena in Newark first received funding from Newark's city council in 2002, when the team was owned by Puck Holdings, a subsidiary of YankeeNets. In 2004, former Lehman Brothers executive Jeffrey Vanderbeek bought the team from Puck Holdings and became a strong proponent of the proposed arena. Vanderbeek said, "The Devils need a new arena that can provide a game-day experience that is certainly equal to the best team in the National Hockey League and certainly equal to the product that is put on the ice."He also stated that he believed the arena "would take downtown Newark to a whole new level."After legal battles over both eminent domain and the city's financial participation in the arena project, the final deal was approved by council in October 2004.

Take Exit 15W onto I-280 westbound.
Turn right on Exit 15A towards Route 21 South.
Turn right onto Rector Street.
Turn left onto Broad Street.
Continue southbound on Broad Street and make a left onto Lafayette Street.
Prudential Center will be on your left hand side.

Take Exit 14 toward I-78.
Take the center ramp after the toll booth toward US-1-9 / RT-21.
Keep right to stay on the ramp toward US-1 / US-9.
Continue on US-1-9 (approx 3 miles) and exit on the right onto RT-21 McCarter Hwy.
Take Broad Street exit on right.
Continue northbound on Broad Street and make a right onto Lafayette Street.
Prudential Center will be on your left hand side.

Follow Garden State Parkway South to Exit 145.
Follow signs to Route 280 East.
Follow Route 280 East to Exit 15 (Route 21 - Downtown/Arts).
At bottom of ramp (traffic light), make a right onto Route 21 South.
Turn right onto Rector Street.
Turn left onto Broad Street.
Continue southbound on Broad Street and make a left onto Lafayette Street.

From George Washington Bridge or Lincoln Tunnel, follow signs for New Jersey Turnpike South.
Take Exit 15W onto I-280 westbound.

Prudential Center is just two blocks from Newark Penn Station and connected to Newark Broad Street Station by frequent, convenient bus & Light Rail service.

NJ TRANSIT is the fast, easy way to travel to Prudential Center. With direct service to Newark on six rail lines, more than two dozen bus routes and the Newark Light Rail system, you can travel from almost anywhere in New Jersey as well as New York and Philadelphia. Rail connections are available at Secaucus Junction from Bergen, Passaic, Rockland and Orange counties.

If you choose to take the train to the Broad Street Station, you can take the Newark Light Rail to Newark Penn Station and Prudential Center is just two block west of the station.

PATH

Prudential Center can be easily accessed from PATH’s Newark Station. PATH provides rapid rail transportation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, connecting Newark with Harrison, Jersey City, Hoboken and Manhattan. From any of PATH’s 13 stations, passengers can be in Newark within minutes. Prudential Center is a short walk from PATH’s Newark terminal. PATH coordinates with Prudential Center in an effort to accommodate late night customers returning from scheduled events.
